Devon Avenue Streetscape for the Chicago
Department of Transportation
The City of Chicago, in their efforts to
improve streets and beautify neighborhoods,
engaged MACTEC to perform the necessary
planning and investigations for the improvement
of the W. Devon Avenue commercial area between
Broadway and Clark. The project objectives
were to provide a new surface on Devon with
a new curb, improved drainage, modernized
street lighting, street furniture and other
enhancements including:
- Planters with
decorative metal railings intermingled
with trees in grates
- New streetlights
with tear-shaped lenses staggered with
smaller decorative pedestrian lights
- Handicapped-accessible
intersections including medallion stamps
with a rolled abstract design that matches
local architectural features
- A narrowed roadway
allowing wider sidewalks
- Construction sequencing
in three-block phases whereby construction
cannot tie up more that one block at a
time
