Roof Replacement at Carroll Middle School
Wins ACEC/NC 2002 Honors Award
The American Council of Engineering Companies
of North Carolina presented MACTEC with
a 2002 Honors Award for the roof replacement
project at Carroll Middle School in Raleigh.
The award represented engineering excellence
in building and technology systems.
During the initial field investigation
for the school's replacement roof design,
MACTEC discovered significant deterioration
of the existing concrete fill and metal
form deck. The adequacy of the existing
deck for the new roof was questionable,
and costly deck repair would likely have
been required.
In response to this concern, MACTEC developed
a unique design to replace the existing
roof with a retrofit standing seam metal
roof system. The system avoided placing
additional roof loads on the deteriorated
deck, and used the existing structural framing
to support the retrofit metal roof. This
innovative design accommodated the roof
replacement without modifying, strengthening
or replacing the deck, and resulted in project
completion under budget, on schedule, and
with minimal disruption to school activities.
