ABSTRACT
A successful methodology for bringing GPS-derived
elevations into remote areas of Florida.
Approximately 2,500 years
ago, the Chinese philosopher Lao-tzu commented
on the nature of water: "Nothing in the
world is more flexible and yielding than water.
Yet when it attacks the firm and the strong,
none can withstand it, because they have no
way to change it."
To the State of Florida, bounded
as it is by the salt waters of the Atlantic
Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico, and interspersed
with numerous fresh-water rivers, springs, inland
lakes, and its environmental "crown jewel,"
the Everglades, water is ever-present. While
usually a blessing to humankind, it can also
be a wrecker of property and an instrument of
death.
