A successful methodology for bringing GPS-derived elevations into remote areas
of Florida.
Approximately 2,500 years ago, the Chinese philosopher Lao-tzu commented on the
nature of water: "Nothing in the world is more flexible and yielding than water.
Yet when it attacks the firm and the strong, none can withstand it, because they
have no way to change it."
To the State of Florida, bounded as it is by the salt waters of the Atlantic
Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico, and interspersed with numerous fresh-water rivers,
springs, inland lakes, and its environmental "crown jewel," the Everglades,
water is ever-present. While usually a blessing to humankind, it can also be a
wrecker of property and an instrument of death.
