Installation Restoration and BRAC-Related Services (1986 – Ongoing)

Since 1986, the US Army Corps of Engineers, Sacramento District has been so pleased with MACTEC’s performance that they have repeatedly selected us as their principal environmental contractor for compliance and restoration services. During this 16-year partnership, MACTEC has completed over 250 multidisciplinary environmental tasks and established long-term relationships with the USACE, Fort Ord staff, regulatory agencies and local communities.

MACTEC’s services at Fort Ord have included preliminary assessments, site inspections, risk assessments, Remedial Investigation / Feasibility Studies (RI/FS), remedial action / remedial design, and environmental compliance. By joining forces, MACTEC and the Army have completed turnkey environmental engineering and restoration services at the Fort Ord Complex and accelerated the transfer of this Superfund site to the local community.

Project Features:

  • To expedite the Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) motivated transfer needs of Fort Ord, MACTEC successfully implemented an innovative, accelerated RI/FS program. MACTEC’s accelerated RI/FS at the massive 128,000-acre Fort Ord facility was completed 12 months ahead of schedule and shaved 5 years off the cleanup program.

  • MACTEC’s report detailing Fort Ord’s accelerated RI/FS program was so well received by the Pentagon that it has been used as a model for other installations. Also, Fort Ord is one of few installations in the country to meet the requirements of the Panetta Legislation’s accelerated schedule of 36 months.

  • Several of the more than 150 sites at the Fort Ord Complex required remedial alternatives. For example, MACTEC designed, constructed, and continues to operate a successful groundwater and soil treatment system at the Fritzsche Army Airfield Burn Pit. The system was designed to remediate dissolved phase chlorinated hydrocarbons (including trichloroethane) in the groundwater and petroleum hydrocarbons in the soil.

  • MACTEC’s turnkey capabilities became invaluable at many Fort Ord sites that required remedial action. We have been instrumental in the cleanup of sites requiring groundwater pump and treat systems, bioremediation systems, dump site excavations and landfill caps.
