An environmental assessment can consist of several
phases, with the scope of each phase dependent
on previous results and your needs. The assessment
phases can include:
• Phase I - Environmental Site Assessments
• Phase II - Contamination Assessments
• Phase III - Remedial Investigation and
Design
• Phase IV - Cleanup Execution
Phase I - Environmental
Site Assessments
A Phase I environmental site assessment (PESA)
is a noninvasive study designed to evaluate the
potential environmental hazards and liabilities
associated with a property. A PESA involves an
evaluation of past property usage, a review of
federal and state environmental regulatory lists
to determine if the property or nearby properties
are known to be contaminated, an assessment of
the hydrogeologic setting of the property, and
a site visit and visual reconnaissance of the
property to observe possible environmental concerns.
Phase II - Soil and
Groundwater Contamination Assessments
A Phase II contamination assessment is recommended
if concerns of potential environmental conditions
are revealed during the Phase I. A Phase II typically
involves sampling and testing of soil, ground
water or surface water. The analytical results
provide baseline data and, if significant contamination
is found, an iterative process is begun to determine
the type/s and extent of contamination present.
Phase III - Remedial
Investigation and Cleanup Method Design
The third phase of activity may involve a remedial
investigation and feasibility study to identify
and select cleanup alternatives. The extent and
degree of contamination defined in the Phase II
is used to design a cost-effective cleanup operation.
The cleanup options generally include:
• Removal of contaminants to an approved
landfill or treatment facility
• In-place treatment
• Encapsulation or fixation
• Offsite treatment
Phase IV - Cleanup
Execution
The fourth phase involves execution of the selected
cleanup method. MACTEC provides turnkey contracting
services for environmental remediation and site
restoration. Services include quality control
monitoring, health and safety monitoring, field
sampling, report preparation, construction monitoring
of contractor cleanup activities, verification
sampling and cleanup documentation.
