MACTEC's extensive nationwide network of multi-disciplinary engineers, scientists, and technicians can provide emergency response services for virtually any natural or manmade disaster. Our experience encompasses many of the most high-profile emergencies in recent years, from the devastating earthquake in Northridge, California to the September 11 terrorist attacks, to hurricanes Frances, Jeanne, and most recently, Katrina.

"We received direct hits from both Hurricanes Frances and Jeanne. Many of your engineers came to our aid and you will never know what a blessing they were in our time of need. We appreciate the fine men and women who went beyond the call of duty, working from dawn to dusk to help protect what was left of our personal belongings during this disaster... It was very reassuring to know that someone would be returning to cover the roof with plastic tarps for protection in preventing further damage to our home."

– Harris family, Sebastian, Florida

In situations like these, a quick response is critical in managing human health and environmental risks, as well as minimizing disruption to business or government operations. Teams of MACTEC professionals with specific expertise in facilities; building systems; structural, material, geotechnical, environmental, and chemical engineering; toxicology; industrial hygiene; geophysical assessment; and construction materials inspection and testing—including nondestructive inspection and testing of structural steel and concrete—can be rapidly mobilized and immediately productive.

In response to air quality emergencies such as sick building syndrome, our professionals have the expertise and resources to identify, remediate, and provide ongoing monitoring of virtually all types of indoor air pollutants including toxic mold, carbon monoxide, radon, asbestos, lead-based paint, and PCBs.

MACTEC has a history of proven performance in emergency and high-priority response situations, when every decision is critical and there is little leeway to accommodate a learning curve. To learn more about our emergency response and disaster recovery services (listed below), please contact us.

Massive Asbestos Abatement Effort Restores Fire-Damaged Building to Safety
Fire broke out in a 34-story, 900,000-sq-ft building in Texas, which was in the final stages of an asbestos abatement program. The heat of the blaze melted the protective plastic enclosure material at the work site, while contaminated smoke spread to other floors. Along with fifty MACTEC professionals and technicians, nearly 500 asbestos specialists—representing seven abatement contractors—worked around the clock in two shifts until the cleanup and restoration were complete. After only thirty days, the building was certified for reoccupancy by building and state officials.

Major Hurricane Response Mission Completed in Sixty Days
In 2004, hurricanes Frances and Jeanne tore through Central Florida, causing billions of dollars in damage and destruction. Within 48 hours of Notice to Proceed by the US Army Corps of Engineers, MACTEC's 32-person team was on site in Central Florida to support Operation Blue Roof. The immediate goal was to provide temporary roofing repairs to as many affected homes as possible. MACTEC's initial team was followed by a second 32-person team, both of which worked with subcontractors to complete over 1,000 quality assurance roofing inspections throughout Central Florida within 60 days. Aside of the extreme efficiency of our teams and contractors, one element that contributed to this quick turnaround was the database we developed. By synchronizing the database with GIS tools, we enabled our client to track mission progress and to develop maps to each field location.

Business Resumes Safely at Ground Zero in Three Days
Within 24 hours of the collapse of the World Trade Center towers, MACTEC mobilized a team of facilities and environmental specialists to survey over two million square feet of office space adjacent to Ground Zero. Our client safely resumed Wall Street operations in time for the opening bell of the stock exchange three days later.

Quick Response Minimizes Mold Impact
When a client discovered mold growth on two floors of their new office building following flooding from a burst pipe, they placed a single call to MACTEC. We immediately mobilized an emergency response team and had personnel on site the same day. Two days later a remediation contractor was at work, and within two weeks our client's mold problem was resolved.
