Massive
Asbestos Abatement Effort Restores Fire-Damaged
Building to Safety
Fire broke out in a 34-story, 900,000
S.F. building in Texas, which was in
the final stages of an asbestos abatement
program. The heat of the blaze melted
the protective plastic enclosure material
at the work site, and contaminated smoke
spread to other floors. Fifty MACTEC
professionals & technicians were
assembled from nine offices throughout
the U.S. Approximately 500 asbestos
specialists representing seven abatement
contractors worked around the clock
in two shifts, amassing a total of 100,000
manhours before the cleanup and restoration
was complete. The building was certified
by building and state officials for
reoccupancy after only 30 days.
