Focused on the natural and built environment, MACTEC provides clients with cost-effective sustainable solutions that improve their business without jeopardizing future generations. As a leading national consulting firm, our sustainable solutions leverage MACTEC’s experience across six key resource areas:
From Planning through Design through Implementation and Verification, MACTEC’s sustainable solutions leverage our expertise across the six key resource areas where the actions of our clients can impact sustainability and provide triple bottom line benefits to all stakeholders.
Environmental – minimizing impacts to the environment Economical – improving long-term profitability and achieving greater efficiency Societal – meeting the needs of our clients, shareholders and the public in today’s energy and carbon-constrained world.
AIR
IMPROVING THE AIR WE BREATHE
Recognizing the impact of man’s activities on our climate and the air we breathe, MACTEC has for over three decades brought innovation to improving air quality through source assessment, implementing best practices for greenhouse gases and pollution control, policy implementation and compliance monitoring. The methods used leverage science and technology to achieve a balance between improvements gained and costs expended.
Water
ENSURING THE AVAILABILITY OF CLEAN WATER FOR TODAY AND TOMORROW
With the possible exception of air, water is the single most important resource to life on earth – and the most in jeopardy. As the emphasis has been broadened from point sources to include non-point sources, there is a much better understanding of how daily activities can adversely impact both water quantity and quality. MACTEC engineers and scientists take a holistic approach to water management, recognizing the interconnection between groundwater and surface water and how impacts on one medium can affect another. Our water management programs address the engineering, public policy and economic aspects of securing and managing both water quality and quantity to ensure safe, reliable water for future generations.

LAND
LAND PLANNING WITH A LONG - TERM VIEW
Growth can have a positive – or negative – impact upon our scarce land resources. MACTEC design professionals embrace a philosophy that promotes the highest and best use of land resources, while carefully considering both near-term and future impacts upon the environment. Development and growth need not occur at the expense of sustainability, so our designs utilize “smart growth” concepts to emphasize the economic use of land to meet today’s needs – while recognizing the needs of future generations. MACTEC is also an established leader in the area of land reuse with the development of award-winning brownfield redevelopment projects, reinforcing the concept that beneficial land use can change over time.

ENERGY
ACHIEVING RELIABILITY, SECURITY AND ECONOMY IN ENERGY USE
Energy in all forms – thermal, mechanical, electrical and chemical – plays an important role in our economic health, national security and quality of life. Energy is expended when converted from one form to another and when transmitted from one location to another. A sustainable energy management program is one that minimizes the amount of energy required by maximizing the efficiency of conversion and transmission. MACTEC’s knowledge of alternative technologies and fuel sources, coupled with its experience in energy efficiency, distributed generation and alternative energy, has resulted in significant reductions in both energy usage and end-cost for its public- and private-sector clients.

MATERIALS
MINIMIZING THE IMPACTS OF MATERIAL WASTE THROUGH LIFE CYCLE MANAGEMENT
One of the greatest challenges we face today is what to do with the waste generated by human activity. Recognizing the scarcity of raw material and the often significant environmental impact of converting these materials into usable products, MACTEC strives to find ways to minimize waste through reclamation and reuse opportunities. This can reduce the environmental impact of both raw material extraction and used material disposal. Our experience in materials testing and life cycle management provides the means to identify opportunities to extend the value of a material through waste minimization, recycling or reuse for a different purpose.
ECOSYSTEM
RESTORING THE HEALTH OF CRITICAL HABITATS AND ECOSYSTEMS
Ecological systems are an often fragile balance of interacting factors which have, over time, been disturbed by human activities. The benefits of maintaining the balance of a healthy ecosystem include water quality, land stability, wildlife diversity and recreational opportunities. MACTEC scientists and engineers have used their understanding of these sensitive systems in many successful projects undertaken to restore this delicate balance through revitalization, restoration and preservation of the nation’s natural resources and critical habitats.
