Brownfield redevelopment at Atlantic Station
Atlanta, Fulton County, Georgia
MACTEC transformed 138 acres of an abandoned, century-old steel
mill into a vibrant, sustainable, mixed-use community. Atlantic Station, in
downtown Atlanta, is the national model for smart growth and brownfield
redevelopment.
The Atlantic Steel facility in midtown Atlanta operated from 1901 to 1998,
resulting in extensive site contamination. After closure, the property was
purchased with intent to redevelop it into a "live-work-play" environment.
Today, the $2 billion Atlantic Station includes approximately 12 million square
feet of retail, office, residential, and hotel space, homes for 10,000
residents, and a multi-modal bridge.
MACTEC was involved with Atlantic Station from the start, providing environmental
assessment and remediation, civil and geotechnical engineering, infrastructure
design, construction materials testing, and construction management services.
MACTEC’s innovative planning reduced costs throughout the project, and on
remediation alone from original estimates of $40-50 million to only $10 million.
