Improving a Natural Wonder of Georgia
Albany, Dougherty County, Georgia
One of the "Seven Natural Wonders of Georgia," Radium Springs is the largest
natural spring in the state. 70,000 gallons per minute of sapphire-blue,
68-degree water emerge from a limestone aquifer adjacent to the Flint River near
Albany. The spring and its associated creek form part of a spectacular 95-acre
cypress swamp landscape that includes ruins and remnants from the Radium Springs
Casino and swimming area.
MACTEC developed a site master plan that balanced environmental goals of the
Georgia Department of Natural Resources with recreational goals of the nearby
community of Radium Springs. The master plan subdivided the land into three
districts: a Community Park district, a Conservation/Education district, and a
Cultural district.
