Remediation assessment of a former fuel tank farm
Unalaska, Aleutian Islands, Alaska
MACTEC investigated and measured both extent and intensity of contamination at a
pre-WW II fuel tank farm. Safety and health planning included hazardous, toxic,
and radioactive waste as potential threats, and large amounts of free petroleum
distillates were discovered near Dutch Harbor.
MACTEC also conducted groundwater testing as part of the site assessment.
Discovery of the contamination plume enabled MACTEC to recommend remediation
actions leading to eventual closure of the site by Alaska Department of
Environmental Conservation. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers realized nearly 20%
cost savings as a result of MACTEC involvement on this project.
