Restoration of Johnson’s Shut-Ins State Park

Lesterville, Reynolds County, Missouri

When AmerenUE’s 55-acre Taum Sauk hydroelectric reservoir breached, 1.5 billion gallons of water rushed into a southeastern-Missouri state park, scouring land, destroying habitat, and leaving tons of sediment, trees, and construction debris in its wake.

MACTEC was on-scene for the client within 48 hours of the breach to assess environmental impact and mitigate further damage. During the next two years, MACTEC removed more than 100,000 cubic yards of flood-related sediment, remediated the affected Black River and Shut-Ins geologic formation, restored the park ecosystem, and rebuilt and added new park amenities.
